Being Human: Across Three Modes
Posted: Aug 16, 2026

Human beings are animals by nature. So, I suppose it is only natural that we often operate in three predominant modes.
A couple of them come straight out of the wild: eat or be eaten.
The third, though, is uniquely human—or perhaps even beyond. That’s where we can choose to be different.
The Prey Mode
This doesn't sound very flattering, but most of us begin here.
Prey mode is insecurity in its various forms: fear, sadness, self-doubt, victimhood, and that uncomfortable feeling that those around us might somehow overpower us.
We dance to others' tunes. Their judgment and rejection matter way too much. We become extra careful, over-accommodating, and tolerant; all in the name of “being nice.” And naturally, in such a state of mind, we become the prey.
There is no mystery here. Those in “prey mode” need help.
Often, that could even mean clinical support—therapy, healing, etc. The primary work here is in understanding why we fear and succumb to other human beings in the first place.
Eventually, when we rise above this, we stop being prey. Unfortunately, we then head into the next—and even more dangerous—mode.
The Predator Mode
Congratulations, you've just found your own mighty ego!
Predator mode has a rather wide spectrum. At the lighter end, this is "merely" an elephant-sized ego. Keep walking and you will meet its dinosaur cousins: arrogance, superiority complex, manipulation, and, of course, narcissism.
This transition from prey to predator is inevitable. You spent years feeling small and finally discovered your confidence. You found your innate power.
Wonderful. Now comes the danger of becoming a jerk.
This is where many get stuck because predator mode feels remarkably good. Rewarding, even—especially in the corporate world. You're no longer in continual fear. Except now, your ego has taken over and blinded you.
And this is where we begin to face a spiritual void. Questions about life, a lack of peace, purposelessness, and everything that follows.
We can keep feeding the ego—with admiration, achievement, and power—but none of that will give you peace. Material success alone isn't enough here.
The predator needs spiritual growth.
The Divine Mode
Then there is the third. It could be called Human Mode, but so are Prey and Predator. It is all part of being human; and so, we call it the Divine Mode.
In Divine Mode, you are neither insecure nor a jerk. Neither a doormat nor a narcissist. You don't need to make yourself smaller to please anyone, but you don't need to make anyone else feel smaller either.
You might hunt, but only when needed. The lions among people!
In one form or another, this is where pretty much every faith and philosophy eventually leads: beyond fear, beyond ego, beyond the endless human obsession with the self.
Love. Peace. Compassion. Those are the key words here.
In Short
Prey needs support. Predator needs spirituality. Divine simply thrives in peace.
Love,
N
